Ann Finnemore, Hypnotherapy, Coaching and Stress Management

I blog about the latest research, items appearing in the news, related books I've read and about how the various tools and techniques I use in therapy and coaching work. I also like to pass on any tips that could help you succeed in making any of those changes you've been thinking of (along with the occasional healthy recipe). I hope at least some of what I write makes you think -- that's always a good way to kick off a change of some sort!

Anxiety in children

Anxiety in children

I read in the news recently that anxiety in children, particularly in teenage girls, is increasing significantly. Although saddened to read this, I wasn’t surprised as I do a lot of work with children to help them learn to manage, and then lose, anxieties which are affecting their lives – at home and at school. In recent years, requests for this area of work have become all too common

Often the anxieties focus on academic performance – a fear of failing exams, or of not being confident at school. However, anxiety being what it is, in reality it leaks out into all areas of life making even what were once pleasurable activities a trial. It is such a shame that young people are suffering like this at a time in their lives when there is actually so much that is exciting and so full of potential. And it’s not just teenagers – I have worked with children as young as eight who have developed anxiety and lack of confidence.

The good news is that this anxiety can be greatly reduced, even lost, through a combination of coaching and/or hypnotherapy. What’s more, using these methods to deal with anxiety whilst still young then equips the person with skills which they will be able to use for the rest of their life – to manage stressful situations of all sorts. It’s a shame that these stress management skills are usually only taught once stress has become a problem. Effective as that can be, how much better it would be to teach these skills earlier, so that they are already there when the pressure builds? There’s so much that can be done for prevention – for building resilience. Just imagine the positive impact on lives if managing stress were regarded as a basic life skill along with reading and writing? What potential for the future that would release!
